Unlike other medical care, the focus of end of life care isn't to cure the underlying disease. The goal is to support the highest quality of life possible for whatever time remains.

While the symptoms in the final stages of life vary from person to person and according to the type of life-limiting illness, there are some common symptoms experienced near the end of life. It’s important to remember, though, that experiencing any of them does not necessarily indicate that your loved one’s condition is deteriorating or that death is close.

Who Qualifies for End of Life Services?

Treatments are no longer working or are causing more pain and discomfort than they seem to be worth.

The individual has serious pain or other symptoms that are proving very difficult to manage, such as continued weight loss, severe fatigue, difficulty with daily personal care, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and continuing fluid build-up in the body.

The individual wants to focus on the quality of their life instead of curing a disease.

Family members are beginning to feel overwhelmed emotionally or physically by providing daily care for the loved one and unsure whether they are providing the best possible care; they would benefit from support and guidance from trained professionals.
